Before this show, my only experience with fun. was that I kept hearing their hit single “We Are Young” in commercials. I loved the catchy anthemic quality of the song and was really excited to go to this show. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was absolutely blown away. fun. not only played and sang fun and catchy songs, they did it with an enviable amount of energy. I was completely floored by how talented they are as musicians.
fun. opened the show with “One Foot” from their latest album “Some Nights,” setting the pace early for how energetic the entire show would be. Lead singer Nate Ruess asked the crowd to join in at the end of the song (as if they weren’t already singing along). There were times where it was almost hard to hear the vocals over the crowd. It seemed like there wasn’t a person in the crowd who didn’t know every word to every song. Not only are the songs easy to learn and sing along with, but fun. obviously has very dedicated fans, as well.
One of my absolute favorite moments was during “We Are Young” when Ruess got the entire crowd singing along with the bridge and then asked the girls to continue singing “na na na” while the “dudes” harmonized “take me home tonight.” The crowd actually sounded pretty great!
The set consisted of an equal number of songs from their first studio album, “Aim and Ignite” and “Some Nights,” with a cover of the Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want;” a cover so good I would love to see them produce an entire cover album.
fun. certainly chose the right name. I don’t think I stopped smiling the whole show. They may be one of the most original and best pop bands making music today. They certainly deserve the recent success and I hope they stick around and come back to Detroit soon!
