Having seen Incubus live 5 previous times, I came into my 6th show with high expectations. As always, my expectations were met and exceeded. The set opened with the sound of a dial-up modem connecting, signaling the start of “Love in a time of surveillance” from their aptly named eighth album, “8”. ⅓ of the setlist was populated by new tracks including the latest single “Nimble Bastard”, “Loneliest”, “Glitterbomb”, and “Make No Sound in the Digital Forest”.
Although new songs were in abundance, fan favorites permeated the night. If there was a fan in the house who didn’t hear their favorite Incubus song, it was impossible to tell. The crowd roared along with nearly every lyric throughout the night. I was personally got to hear my favorite, “Warning” early as the second in the set. My favorite song to hear live, “Sick Sad Little World”, came about ⅔ of the way through. Other fan favorites were “Anna Molly”, “Wish You Were Here” (with part of the Pink Floyd song of the same name as an outro), “Pardon Me”, “Drive”, and the regular set closer, “Nice to Know You”. The band came back to the stage with their commonly played encore “Aqueous Transmission”, with guitarist Mike Einzinger on the Chinese Pipa.
Lead singer Brandon Boyd doesn’t do a lot of talking or direct interacting with the crowd, but his energy alone has the crowd under his control. He is mesmerizing to watch as he moves around the entire stage dancing, plays various hand drums, and shedding layers of clothing until eventually shirtless (not until 4th from last song, if you are wondering).
Incubus is a band that I will make sure to see live every time they come to town. They are a guaranteed fun time with so many familiar songs that will please every fan. The only thing that could have made the night better would have been hearing our namesake song. Maybe next time!
