It was a great night to do some head banging at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Thursday, August 28, 2014. The first band to play was Bang Tango who, while the crowd was just starting to arrive, put on one of the most energetic performances of the night. Lead singer Joe Lesté was really committed to putting on an engaging show. Their funk-inspired hard rock sound was a great addition to the lineup.
The crowd got a bit larger as Dio Disciples took the stage. The band consists of several former members of the final lineup of Dio and played a hard rocking set of Dio hits. With two frontmen Mark Boals and Oni Logan, the band rocked through a great set of classic Dio hits that the fans in the crowd really loved hearing.
Next up was Great White, consisting of mostly long time band members and fronted by more recent addition Terry Ilous. Ilous is a great replacement for original lead vocalist Jack Russell. He is a great singer and the band really nailed the set of classic Great White jams. Lead guitarist Mark Kendall was a real highlight of the show. That guy can shred like the best of them.
Headlining the night was Queensrÿche who played with an almost original lineup except for newer lead vocalist Todd La Torre and guitarist Parker Lundgren. To put it plainly, the band really sounded awesome! They played a ton of old hits and rocked every one of them. The recent drama between former lead singer Geoffe Tate and the rest of the band doesn’t seem to have affected their performance at all. It was great to see them live and hear how much they still rock! This was a really fun show perfect for the headbanging crowd. All of the bands are really keeping the 80’s metal sound alive.
