Kongos

Photos and review by Merideth C.

Saint Andrews Hall was packed for Kongos, an unconventional, yet highly talented alternative rock band from Arizona. Consisting of 4 brother of Greek heritage who were born in South Africa, each takes on leading vocal responsibilities on various songs with Johnny Kongos also playing accordion and keyboard, Jesse Kongos playing drums, Daniel Kongos on guitar, and Dylan Kongos on bass guitar. I hadn’t heard much from them until last year when I started hearing a few of their songs on the radio, so I was surprised to see that their last album was released in 2012. Being featured on commercials and in movies increased their popularity last year and led to signing with a new label and releasing their last album.

In their live set they sound as good, or better, than they do on the radio. It’s really unique to see each of them take lead vocal duties on different songs, even singing lead from behind the drumset. In addition to playing their two biggest hits “I’m Only Joking,” and “Come With Me Now,” they also played a few songs from their upcoming album like “I Don’t Mind,” and “Take It From Me.” The crowd seemed to really enjoy the show. Overall, a good mix of slower and more upbeat songs made it very enjoyable.
