Mumford & Sons first album, “Sigh No More,” was released in 2009 to much critical acclaim. Tuesday night June 16, 2015, was Mumford & Sons' first Michigan gig.
The Maccabees opened for Mumford & Sons, and while they were energetic, their set was not much more than a glorified hype session for the main event. Mumford & Sons hit the stage a little after 9 p.m. to an electric, sold out, 15,000 plus fans at DTE Energy Music Theatre.
By their second song, the very well known, "I Will Wait," the crowd was beholden to the band. From there, for well over 90 minutes, Mumford & Sons played through most of their new album while peppering in an equal amount from their earlier offerings.
A raucous rendition of "Little Lion Man," was triumphantly performed as part of the encore much to the delight of those in attendance. If one thing can be said about the overall feeling of the performance, it's that the band was very humbled and grateful to be doing what they're doing. Multiple times throughout the evening, lead singer Marcus Mumford would pause to take in the crowd and give a warm-hearted "Thank you!" At one point, he mentioned skipping their Chicago show, which was scheduled for the next day, to play Detroit again. Maybe next time we'll get two shows?
