Roger Waters’ “The Wall” Live is a superb spectacle of lights and sound that delivers a message that transcends the decades since the release of Pink Floyd’s album of the same name. The two part, 28 song album was played in its entirety in two 1-hour sets that went far beyond just music. This show is all about elaborate theatrics. The first set had crewmembers assembling a massive wall on stage one brick at a time. An enormous video screen spanned the back of the stage showing footage from the “Wall” film, bomber planes dropping corporate logos, footage of soldiers returning form war, and a lot of modern and classic political imagery.
During the first song, “In the Flesh,” explosions and pyrotechnics blazed on the stage, bathing the audience with bright light and heat. A giant, inflatable teacher with buggy LED eyes loomed over the stage during “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” while a children’s choir of local school kids sang the iconic “We don’t need no education” lyrics. During “Mother,” Waters sang a duet with a video version of himself.
Toward the end of the show, during “The Trial,” Waters took the stage in his best fascist dictator outfit with a megaphone and machine gun. The crowd joined recorded chants of “tear down the wall!” as the wall crumbed to the stage. In the ruins of the wall, the acoustic “Outside the Wall” is the perfect ending to one of the most unique and powerful live music events happening today.
“The Wall” Live is outrageous and over-the-top. It is emotional and overwhelming. It is impeccable and entertaining. It is both amazing and depressing that the themes from “The Wall” are still as powerful today as they were in 1979. Even though this summer marks the end of the line for this tour, the wall will continue to be built up for as long as we have war, greed, repression, and corporate influence in our world and it will continue to be torn down as long as we have rebellion and hope.
