She & Him, the indie pop duo consisting of Zooey Deschanel on vocals, piano, and ukelele and M. Ward on guitar played the Hill Auditorium on a rainy Monday night on the 1st of July. Usually known for being the queen of quirkiness on screen, Zooey took a much more relaxed approach on stage. Playing through a 22 song set plus a 2 song encore, She & Him played songs from all 3 of their studio releases including “I Was Made for You,” “I Could’ve Been Your Girl,” and “Me and You.” On top of She & Him originals, they also played several covers like Alex North’s “Unchained Melody,” Frank Sinatra’s “Stars Fell on Alabama,” and the M. Ward original “Magic Trick.”

M. Ward is an extremely talented musician. Every riff he played on his guitar was just right and seeing him sit at the piano with Zooey for the final song of the night was magical. Outside of just the piano, Zooey showed her musical prowess on the electric ukelele and some of her quirkiness on the “mouth trumpet.”

Since Hill Auditorium doesn’t have a “pit” like many venues, is not the kind of place where there is a lot of audience interaction, but by the end of the show, several fans moved close to the stage to dance. She & Him were a pleasantly warm, bright addition to an otherwise gloomy day. I really enjoyed the show and I hope I get the chance to see them again.
